Charity calls for review

BDF Newlife, a disabled children's charity based in the UK, has urged health and safety officials to undertake a review of spending and policy relating to equipment provision for disabled young people.

The organisation has claimed that in the last three years it has spent approximately £1.7 million in grants for families with disabled children, Medical News Today reports.

However, such equipment funding ought to come from Primary Care Trusts and local authorities, the organisation stated.

Sheila Brown OBE, Chief Executive of BDF Newlife, said: "Our research shows that there is little appreciation of the true spending levels needed to give the right level of assistance to disabled children."

Statutory bodies "simply don't know" the number of children who do not have access to equipment, she added.

Originally founded in 1991 as the Birth Defects Foundation, BDF Newlife claims to be the UK's leading children's health and research charity.
